In 1948, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Leuven, Mgr. Van Waeyenbergh, took the initiative to establish a university called Lovanium in Congo. It was not before 1954 however, that the Congolese department of the University of Leuven was officially inaugurated. Minutes of the meeting of the administrative board of Lovanium, 1955.
